VISUALIZING INFORMATION

TIME : Winter 2016

The course provides a comprehensive approach to data visualization with conceptual, technical, and production activities in

  1. Culture analytics as a means to develop skills in both quantitative and qualitative   analyses
  2. Data mining
  3. Data aggregation
  4. Visualization in the java based Processing environment.

Knowledge acquired include

  1. How to identify and retrieve significant data from a dataset with MySQL
  2. Develop skills in the fundamentals of visual language through programming
  3. Visualize abstract data to reveal patterns and relationships
  4. Normalize data to enhance legibility and coherence

PART 1

IS THE SUN OUT ?

Analyzing checkouts from Seattle Public Library depending on the weather conditions.

Visiting a library is a recreational activity for some, academic pursuit for some and research for a few others. But whether we humans take the step ahead and go visit the library for these activities depends on a lot of factors. A major factor that I thought would play a crucial role in this decision at an individual level would be the weather.I wanted to see how the number of checkouts in Seattle Public Library ,which is dependent on the peoples’ presence in library is affected by weather conditions.

PART 2

WHAT IS THE TIME ?

Analyzing checkouts from Seattle Public Library depending on time on a daily basis over the years.

A 3D interactive data visualization to understand the dependency of number of checkouts in Seattle Public Library over years and months.

In this project I wanted to look into the density of the number of checkouts as a function on time on a daily basis. I wanted to ask the question ,whether more people are in the library in the morning hours or in the evening hours. This visualisation in someway can give an insight on how the timings of the library can be modified to make it more accesible to the people of Seattle.

PART 3

CODE OF RED

A 2D interactive data visualization to understand the dependency of inspiration and activity of artists on wars over the past 100 years.

Code of red is an attempt to interactively visualise the dependency of creation of artwork on wars across the world. In a more generic sense, I wanted to look into how oppression effects artists and pushes them to throw out more of their thoughts and ideas.
In a way ,through this is visualisation I wanted to put across how art is a powerful tool, a tool to put across new perspectives, new ideas, make the coming and current generations more aware of how their actions are modifying the world.

Precisely, I have looked into the period of 1900 – 2000 and visualised the period of wars and completed artwork over these years in 21 countries.
